What is the Social Services Department’s objective?

The Social Services Department addresses the social drivers of health which prevent a patient from addressing their medical needs. The department also financially screens patients for Medicaid, Cameron Care, DHR Cares Program, and any other resource that is available in the community.

Are walk-ins welcome or are appointments needed to be seen by the Social Services department staff?

Accepted Answer

Appointments are not necessary. Patients are seen on a walk-in basis every morning from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and as needed in the afternoons. The Social Services Staff also work on prior authorizations and schedule specialty referrals for insured patients from 1:00 – 5:00 PM.

What is a Specialty Referral?

A specialty referral is a request initiated by the patient’s Primary Care Provider(PCP) in order for the patient to be seen by a specialist for medical care that is beyond the patient’s primary care physician’s expertise.

When are prior-authorizations required?

Accepted Answer

Prior-authorizations are required for consultations with specialists if the patient’s insurance requires it, for example HMO’s require one for every specialty consultation.  Imaging such as CT’s and MRI’s require a prior authorization.  Authorizations must be requested before the services are rendered.

Does the Social Service Case Managers issue Specialty Referrals?

No. All Specialty referrals are initiated by the patient’s healthcare provider.

What type of referrals does Social Services issue?

Accepted Answer

Social Services staff will link patients with community resources based on their need. Some of the referrals may be to local area food banks, shelters, housing, Utility Assistance, Friendship of Women and Catholic Charities to name a few.
