Tips for Helping Children Take Medicine

Getting preschoolers and school-age children to take medicine can sometimes be difficult. A few simple tricks may help make the process easier.

 

For liquid medicine, measure the exact dose prescribed by your child’s healthcare provider into a small medicine cup. You can then add a small amount of flavored syrup, such as strawberry or chocolate syrup, to help improve the taste. Mix well before giving it to your child.

 

For tablets, ask your child’s healthcare provider or pharmacist first to make sure the medication can be crushed. If approved, crush the tablet into a fine powder using two spoons. Place the powder into a medicine cup, add flavored syrup, and stir until combined.

 

Always make sure your child takes the full recommended dose. Never mix medicine with food or drinks unless you have confirmed it is safe to do so with your child’s healthcare provider or pharmacist.
